Reading in a Foreign Language 「外国語で読むこと」を第二言語習得論を通して学ぶ
【授業の形態・方法・内容】
この授業は講義科目であり、各授業回のテーマに関する講義（概説）とその内容に関する演習から成ります。 This class is a lecture course, consisting of a lecture on (overview of) the theme of each class session and exercises on the details. ◆内容◆ 毎回、教員がその回のテーマについて英語による講義を行います（英語が得意でない受講生にも理解できるよう、平易な英語や視覚資料を用います）。その後、その内容について各自が短くても良いので、意見を述べる時間を設けます。 まずは、自分の考え（賛成・反対・分からない等）を英語で発信できることを目指します。それに慣れてきたら、受講者間で、お互いの意見を理解したうえで自分の意見を加えられるよう経験を積んでいきます。 演習では、実際に「英文を読む」ことを行い、講義の内容で学んだことを体験し、リーディングという目に見えない認知プロセスを考えていきます。 ◆Content In each class, the instructor will give a lecture on the theme of the class in English (using plain English and visual aids so that students who are not good at English can understand the lecture). After the lecture, each student will have time to express his or her opinion on the topic, even if it is short. The first goal is for students to be able to express their thoughts (agree, disagree, don't know, etc.) in English. Once they are comfortable with this, they will gain experience in understanding each other's opinions and then adding their own. In the exercises, we will actually "read" English words, phrases, sentences, and passages to experience what we have learned in the lectures and to think about the invisible cognitive process of second language reading. ◆形態◆ 原則対面で授業を行います。 ただし、新型コロナウイルスの感染状況等により、大学が遠隔授業に切り替える判断をした場合には、リアルタイムでの授業配信を行うC型で授業を行い、適宜B 型（授業内容を録画した動画を使用）を取り入れます。 ◆Class Format In principle, the class will be conducted face-to-face. However, if the university decides to switch to remote classes due to the COVID-19 situation or other reasons, we will basically use Type C (real-time class delivery) as well as Type B (using video recordings of class content).
【到達目標】
この授業では、（１）外国語で「読むこと」にはどのような知識やプロセスが関わっているのかを「講義」と「演習」で理解すること、（２）理解したことを活かして英語学習を振り返ること、（３）英語で討議することに慣れることを目的としています。

この科目は＜全学DP２＞「教養」に関する「基本的な知識と能力」を身につけるための科目です。
【事前・事後学習】
「大学設置基準」上、この科目は「講義」科目にあたりますので、授業時間外に行う事前事後学習に要する時間は４時間程度となります。 事前に講義に関連した資料（英語）を読むこと。その際に、分からない単語や表現を調べる必要がある。また、その日のテーマについて知りたいことを英語で質問できるよう準備しておく。講義後には、その日に学んだテーマについてのコメント（リフレクションペーパー）を英語で提出する。 This course is classified as a "lecture" course according to the "Standards for the Establishment of Universities," so the time required for prior and post-lecture study outside of class hours is approximately 4 hours. Students are required to read materials (in English) related to the lecture in advance. In doing so, you will need to look up words and expressions that you do not understand. Also, be prepared to ask questions in English about what you want to know about the day's topic. After the lecture, students are expected to submit a reflection paper in English on the topics they learned that day.

第1回 ガイダンス 　　授業の進め方 　　Introduction to Second Language Learning 　　（外国語（第二言語）と第一言語との違いを考える） 第2回 The role of memory in foreign language reading 　　リーディングと「記憶」の関係について考える。 第3回 The complexity of second language reading (1)：Lower-level processing 　　リーディングにはさまざまな知識が関係している。 　　何が必要かを議論し、lower-level processingの重要性を体験する。 第4回 The complexity of second language reading (2)：Higher-level processing 　　リーディングにはさまざまな知識が関係している。 　　何が必要かを議論し、higher-level processingの重要性を体験する。 第5回 Words in the Mind (1) 　　第二言語習得には「語彙知識」が重要であることを否定する人はいない。 　　では、どのようにして学ぶのが良いとされているのだろうか。 第6回 Words in the Mind (2) 　　単語の知識は、どのような側面があり、文章理解にどのように関わっているのだろうか。 第7回 Sentence processing (1) 　　1文の理解にも複雑な認知プロセスが関わる。 　　実際に英文を読みながら、何が読みとりを難しくする要素であるかを議論する。 第8回 Sentence processing (2) 　　1文1文の理解が出来てもまとまりのある文になると分からない 　　…それはなぜなのかを議論する。 第9回 Words in the Mind (3) 　　英単語の知識を把握するためには、どのようなテスト方法があるのだろうか。 　　テスト形式について学び体験する。 第10回 Words in the Mind (4) 　　受講者自身で、英単語テストを作成する。 　　これまでに学んだsentence processingについての知識も活用する。 第11回 Reading as a guessing game (1) 　　「読む」際には、先を推測するプロセスが関係する。 　　英文を読みながら「推論の生成」を体験する。 第12回 Reading as a guessing game (2) 　　推論がどのように生成されるのかをさまざまなテストから考える。 第13回 Categorizing Test Items (1) 　　リーディング能力を測定するテストには、どのような項目があり、 　　何を意図しているのだろうか。馴染みのあるTOEICを分析する。 第14回 Categorizing Test Items (2) 　　リーディング能力を測定するテストの項目分析を別のテストでも行う。 　　TOEIC、TOEFL、英検などを比較する。 第15回 Summary and Discussion 　　学んだことについて討議する。
【評価方法】
授業への参加状況（討議への参加）（10点）、リフレクションペーパーの提出（50点）、事前学習課題（40点）で総合的に判断する。 リフレクションペーパーやその他の提出物については、授業内で全体に向けてフィードバックを行う。

【特記事項】
英語を学ぶための授業ではなく、英語による講義を通して新しい知識を身につけるための授業であることに留意すること。授業では「英語」を使用することを基本とする。 Keep in mind that this is not a class for learning English, but for acquiring new knowledge through lectures in English. Use of "English" in the class is a basic rule.
